Overseen at Cherry Cricket

It’s been over five months since a kitchen fire shuttered Cherry Creek’s oldest burger joint, the Cherry Cricket {2641 East 2nd Avenue, Denver; 303.322.7666}. Since then, the team has kept the spirit of the cricket alive, reassuring their fans with up to date info on their social media page and even participating in local charity drives. After months of construction, the wait is almost over, as the Cherry Cricket plans to reopen on April 11.

The Denver institution will return to the Cherry Creek area, doing what is does best, serving amazing burgers with no frills. “Despite being cleaned up and brought back to its original state, The Cricket will remain the ‘black sheep’ of Cherry Creek North,” says co-owner Lee Driscoll. “We didn’t let any fancy restaurant designers anywhere near it.” As for the long hiatus, Driscoll is ready to get back in action, “We can’t wait to get back to what we do best–burgers, beer and of course, frings.”

There is one new addition to the concept, however. As a way to say thanks to the firefighters that helped save the Cricket, the restaurant has created The Fire Belly Burger—a half-pound Cricket Burger with strawberry habanero cream cheese, fried onions, and grilled jalapeños topped with tender pork belly and served on a sesame Kaiser bun. For the month of April, $1 from every Fire Belly Burger sold will go back to the fire houses who helped them.

The weekend-long celebration kicks off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 11, followed by cake and champagne. On April 12, the Cricket will host a food drive for Metro Caring, the largest hunger relief program in Denver. Guests who bring in three cans will also get a basket of fries. On Sunday, April 13 the Cricket will host a memorial service for the three fish that perished in the blaze, complete with bagpipes and dancers.
